Edinburgh

The capital city of Scotland is littered with loads of places that are believed to be haunted. Below are a few of the haunted places in Edinburgh that are worth checking out either during the day or at night if you are brave enough.

Edinburgh Vaults

Completed in 1788 the Edinburgh Vaults are located inside the South Bridge near the Royal Mile. Originally the vaults were used by local businesses such as cobblers but due to poor air circulation, dampness and flooding the businesses soon moves out.
The vaults however, were not left empty for long as the cities poverty stricken with nowhere else left to go soon moved in to the 120 vaults. The vaults were then known as the cities red light district and with this came illness, robbery and murder. The vaults are one of the many places that Burke and Hare frequented during their murderous rampage.
Eventually the conditions of the vaults became so bad that inhabitants started to move out and by 1820 the vaults were closed.
This part of the vaults history was soon forgotten and it was not until 1985 during an excavation that people had in fact lived in these vaults as various artefacts such as childrens toys and dishes were found.
Since the excavation the vaults on the North Side are primarily used for ghost tours due to the frequent reports of paranormal activity and has in fact appeared on TVs Most Haunted and various other TV programmes.

Greyfriars Kirkyard

George MacKenzies mausoleum by Panoramio.
Located in the Old Town of Edinburgh this is undoubtedly one of the creepiest places I have ever been to and I don't even believe in ghosts. The idea just fascinates me. When I first went there it felt eerie it was really quiet even though it was located in the heart of the city. I wasn't until after that I was told that it is classed as one of the most haunted places in Scotland so I decided to look into it and this is what I found.
In the Kirkyard there is a mausoleum where Sir George Mackenzie is buried and it is believed that it is his ghost that haunts the Kirkyard and he it responsible for all of the unexplained events that occur there. There has been reports of attacks, people being injured, cut, bruised and collapsing.
This place is definitely worth visiting I would advise you go by day or at night with a tour group because at night it isn't just the ghosts that you need to watch.
